The latest updates to RheoCube

A brand new tutorials section, an enhanced user experience and faster simulations are just some of the exciting additions to RheoCube. Following on from our last update, RheoCube .19 is now live. Read on to discover what’s new.

RheoCube tutorials are now open!

This is one of the biggest changes to happen. Alongside the RheoCube documentation, users can now avail of a Tutorials section. Some short movies offer step by step guidance on the different processes. In the future, movies with more extended explanations (e.g. on simulation models) will also be found here. We will add new movies continuously, so be sure to check the tutorials section on a regular basis.

There’s now an optional timer for pausing experiments after a set amount of time. This gives you even more control over this process, and reduces the need to check in.

Duration of preprocessing objects

The Process tab of an object will now show the current duration (if
preprocessing), or the total preprocess duration (if completed). It becomes easier to see how much time is involved.

Meso: Automatic timestep optimization

The size of the timestep is a primary determinant of the speed of the simulation, and its size is bounded by the need to keep simulations stable. Rather than choosing a conservative timestep based on a worst-case scenario, this release implements a dynamic timestep that is scaled up or down based on the current state of the simulation. The criterion used is the so-called “Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy condition”. Due to the timestep now being chosen to be as large as possible, meso-scale simulations will show a speed up. Simulations near equilibrium (e.g. contact angle or interfacial tension experiments) will show speed ups of 5 to 10 times. Dynamic simulations (e.g. viscosity experiments) will show smaller speed ups of up to around a factor of 2.
